Elevenses, Thursday 21 March, Commemorating the Miners’ Strike
2024 marks 40 years since the 1984-85 Miners’ Strike with many museums commemorating the anniversary. Join us for an online Elevenses with presentations about some of the exhibitions and events taking place and the opportunity to share your own plans. The session will provide the opportunity for museums to signpost and promote what is happening in the sector for the anniversary.
We hope this session will help start conversations about how museums in former coalfield communities can improve networking, potentially plan to develop a subject specialist network, and deliver both partnership projects and sharing, support events. It may also help provide links to improve connectivity with the mining sectors in Wales and Scotland.
We welcome the New CEO of the National Coal Mining Museum in Wakefield, Lynn Dunning, to introduce the session.
We will hear from:
- The National Coal Mining Museum and their project 84/85 – The Longest Year with a yearlong exhibition and programme of events.
- Clifton Park Museum in Rotherham about their exhibition Days of Laughter, Days of Pain: The Miners’ Strike in Rotherham, 1984-5.
- The Danum Gallery, Library and Museum at Heritage Doncaster will discuss their commemorative exhibition, some of the challenges faced in this co-curation project and how mining heritage impacts the present in an ex-mining town.
- The People’s History Museum, Manchester will discuss their approach to the commemoration along with their event programme.
- Yorkshire and North East Film Archives, in partnership with Teesside University, are making a 15 minute film ‘In the Veins: Coal Communities’ that brings together over a century of archive footage to reveal the story of coal and its connection with communities across the North East of England.
