Elevenses – Monday 2 October

Tea Cup with biscuit

“No New Oil”, “The people are mightier than a lord”

If these slogans sound familiar, you probably remember, or have experienced first-hand, some of the protests staged by climate activist groups in museums and galleries across the UK.

Climate Change protests add an additional challenge to the primary functions of cultural venues to make collections accessible, whilst managing their conservation and protection. Protests have often led to distress and disruption not only to museum staff and operations, but also to visitor experience and enjoyment of these spaces, in addition to the impact on reputation and finances of targeted venues.

In this informal discussion we will explore if there are any steps that the sector can take to mitigate possible risks associated with climate protests. Join Valentina Sabucco, Manager – Security and Protection Advice at Arts Council England, to explore how museums and other venues can navigate the current trend of climate protests. Starting from an analysis of how protests have unfolded and techniques used, we will look at possible security measures that can support cultural venues managing protest-associated risks.

Insightful, interactive and informal, come along to gain new insights from our guests, meet colleagues from the region, and connect with the MDY team. Everyone who works and volunteers in museums in our region is most welcome, including museum freelancers who want to stay connected.
