Carbon Literacy Courses for Museums
We are pleased to announce that bookings are now open for free online Carbon Literacy courses (via Zoom) using the Carbon Literacy Toolkit for Museums. The courses are open to museums in England that are Accredited and Working Towards Accreditation. Priority will be given to non-national museums.
The September live sessions are on Tuesday 12th September (10am-12.30pm) and Thursday 14th September (10-11.45am) and (1-2.45pm). Delegates must attend both days.
What is a Carbon Literacy course?
A Carbon Literacy course will give you an understanding of what climate change is, the scale of its effects, and how museums fit into the global, national and local picture to address climate change. You become Carbon Literate by making an individual pledge, and an organisational pledge to take back to your museum, of what you can do, and is in your power to achieve, to make a significant difference to your carbon impact.
Who are the courses aimed at?
The courses are for paid staff, freelancers and volunteers who work in or with Accredited Museums or those Working Towards Accreditation in England. We advise that, where possible, two people from your organisation attend the course for peer support when developing actions.
What does a course involve?
The courses are delivered online over four modules. In order to become certified as Carbon Literate, you must complete the entire course and submit your individual and organisational pledges. By booking on a Carbon Literacy course, you are committing to undertake 7.5 hours of online training.
Module 1
Independent learning: Pre-recorded course introduction and the basic science of climate change to be completed independently before the live sessions. This section of the course takes 1 hour 30 minutes to complete with links to the pre-recorded content shared by email one week ahead of the first live session.
Module 2
Live online session: Focussing on the impacts of climate change, equity and vulnerability as well as the roles of museums in tackling the climate crisis and green recovery.
Module 3 & 4
Live online sessions: Focussing on carbon budgets, the UK and international policy, carbon footprints, action planning, talking about climate change.
