Collection Care Part 1 & 2

Part of the Collections Care and Management Programme 2023.

Part 1:

This session will cover: an introduction to the museum environment; pest monitoring and control measures; a practical housekeeping session working on a variety of objects provided.

Schedule:

  • The Museum Environment; Light, Humidity, Temperature, Pollution, Mould and Pests
  • Identification
  • Prevention
  • Monitoring and control; Condition Assessments, Object handling

Part 2:

This session will cover: environmental monitoring (interpreting data); environmental control methods; creating microclimates (storage and display); a practical session including using packing materials to create cost effective microclimates.

Schedule:

  • Environmental Monitoring, Analysing environmental data, Control and management, Display and Storage techniques for environmental control
  • Packing for storage and transportation

These in-person sessions will be held at venues in the North-West, North-East and Yorkshire and you will be able to choose where to attend.  Collections Care Part 1 and Part 2 are combined into one session in the North-East.

This series of workshops, developed collaboratively by MDY, MDNW and MDNE, have been designed to support you and other staff in your museum to achieve, maintain and improve Collections Care and Management practices and to meet Museum Accreditation requirements detailed in Section 2 of the ACE managed Museum Accreditation Standard.

We hope that you will choose to attend all 5 of the sessions in this programme, but this is not compulsory.

Workshop 1:  Policies, Plans and Procedures

This session will be delivered online via Zoom on 31 August 2023, 10.30am to 12.30pm: an overview of policies, plans and procedures.

Workshop 4: Labelling and Marking

Choose an in-person work shop on either 15, 21 or 22 November: an overview of Spectrum 5.0 primary procedure of labelling and marking; a chance to review your own procedures; a practical session of labelling and marking objects.

Workshop 5: Reducing energy consumption in the care of collections

This session will be delivered online via Zoom on 12 December 2023, 10am to 12.30pm: an overview of how energy reduction can be achieved in environmental control, exhibitions and collections care.
